An invitation to hear President Obama speak? Yes, please!

What would you do if you got an invitation to hear The President speak about education reform? Yes, me too!

President Barack ObamaHello President Obama!

I reluctantly left the cocoon of the SF Bay Area after a two week parental visit we enjoyed beautiful weather, great food, and a relaxing time after the Yahoo! MotherBoard Summit. Needless to say, I had a little bit of trouble adjusting to the time difference. After staying up way too late on Tuesday night (3 am- hello jet lag!), the wonderful Justice Fergie DMed me the following morning to ask if I’d like to go hear The President speak on Thursday with fellow local Blogalicious women.

President Barack Obama!!! Y-E-S!!!

Of course I said yes even before I had asked Tech Savvy Daddy, inquired about the time, or secured child care. Oops. My awesome husband said yes and to go without thinking about childcare. Hooray! But being downtown by 6:45 am? Ugh. Especially when still on California time. Double ugh.

But the early morning wakeup, absence of caffeine and food, combined with waiting-waiting- and-more-waiting around with some of the most fabulous DC bloggers around was completely worth it.
Blogalicious press pool

Especially when I was handed this:

Blogger press pass- note the special tag in on the right side!

This is probably one of my favorite souvenirs from an event ever! Do you see the white hexagon tag at the bottom right corner of my super large press pass? Why yes it does say White House Press Pool! I would have never ever imagined having one of these in my possession when taking journalism classes in high school and college!

Here’s another photo just in case you missed it:

Even though it says Property of U.S. Government I did not have to return it.

Right after being handed the aforementioned coveted pass, the press corp was ushered into a security line. We were instructed to drop all of our things and stand in single file line. I don’t know about you but I rarely leave my purse with my camera, netbook, phone, etc. anywhere let alone in a huge place with tons of people. But I didn’t want to argue with The Secret Service and since members of the press had much fancier equipment than me, I dropped my stuff and went.

Bypassing the huge line of people that stretched down multiple flights of stairs and around the convention center, I was ushered through a metal detector before bunching up with my press buddies for some more waiting. Then like cattle, we all bunched up and waited behind the fence (table) for further instructions as we watched bomb sniffing dogs sniff our belongings and purses opened and hand searched. Thank goodness they didn’t want my Luna Bars (aka breakfast)!

The Secret Service would never tolerate the disorder and dilly-dallying
that is commonly found in the TSA lines!

Upon getting the all clear, we fled to grab our stuff and were taken to the room (aka cavernous convention hall) where The President would be speaking. It was dark, there were lots of chairs, I didn't take a photo. Sorry.

Of course there was waiting-waiting- and-more-waiting especially since those of us in the press pool were the first ones to enter. We were confined behind a waist high red curtain and heavily guarded by Secret Service who told us that we were not allowed to leave. There was no search for caffiene IVs, group trip to the bathroom, or any chance of Lindsay of Rock and Roll Mama making her 11 am meeting.

We made the best of our time, multitasking as usual. Tweets were sent, Mac tips were shared, iGo Charge Anywheres were exchanged to power dead phones, and I rejoiced when I could connected to free wifi avoiding $16.95/hour convention center charges!

Lindsay schools Fergie and Ny on Mac shortcuts during our wait

Mid-conversation with Amanda (Parenting by Dummies and Then Again Photography) there was a rumble overhead. Could it be? Marine One??? It was twenty minutes to 10 and resourceful bloggers behind me had already checked The President's schedule on WhiteHouse.gov to confirm that his speech would begin at 10:05. Excitement grew in our part of the press corral.

Around 10 am National Urban League President Marc Morial took to the stage, giving a short speech before this...

And that's when the early morning wakeup and the waiting became worthwhile! Forgive the shaky video. I was standing about 6 inches from the edge of the press platform!

President Obama spoke about education reform under his Race to the Top Plan. While it was inspiring to hear him speak, the plan is controversial for many reasons that I will address in my next post. As you can imagine, I have lots to say on the topic!

In the meantime, enjoy my Flickr slideshow of other images from the morning!

Special thanks to Blogalicious and the b-Link who made it possible to attend President Obama's speech to the National Urban League and T-Mobile for providing me with the Dell Mini with WebConnect to tweet throughout the speech. I was not compensated to attend the event or write this post and all opinions are my own.

Plug In and Cool Off with Brands Unlimited M&M Products (giveaway)

Summer in DC has been hot and steamy as usual but feels especially worse after coming home from a two week stint in the San Francisco Bay Area where summer temps set records due to chilliness!

If you are feeling the summer heat like I am, perhaps you need a Brands Unlimited M&M USB Fan ($14.50) to blow a cool breeze across your desk. This plug and play little fan doesn’t require an external power supply because it plugs right into your USB port. The 6 foot long cable is plenty long enough to run underneath your desk if you need it to plug into a tower that sits on the floor.

The only problem I have with this fan being solely powered by USB is my lack of available USB ports. Despite a couple of hubs, I still would have to sacrifice one of my other devices in order to plug this in. Thankfully, Brands Unlimited also sent a M&M Computer Hub ($14.50)!

If a cool breeze helps you make it through a summer of being in your office, then you might appreciate M&M USB Fan plugged into your matching M&M Computer Hub!

While neither products are space savers, they can be a fun addition to the kids' computer or will help add personality to any M&M loving techie's cubicle!

Giveaway: Cool off with a M&M USB Fan and plug it into your M&M Computer Hub! Just leave a comment telling me your favorite kind of M&Ms and I’ll draw a lucky winner for the M&M prize pack in about a week. Chocolate not included!

Brands Unlimited provided product samples for review purposes. No compensation was received for this review or hosting a giveaway.

My BlogHer Must Haves

This time next week I’ll be at BlogHer with 1000 other blogging women and a few men at the largest blogging conference of the year.

I'm speaking

If you are coming, please highlight the Room of Your Own on Resource Blogging (August 6, 2:45-4 pm) where I'll be speaking with Jessica (A Parent in Silver Spring), Amy (TeachMama), and Susan (Toddler Planet). Please do come on over and say hi, especially if we've never met IRL! I'd love to meet you! And I really and truly mean it!

Since it is the week before BlogHer, there's lots of buzz about conference on Twitter and via back channel emails. Everyone is writing their pre-BlogHer posts and since I’ve been dispensing a lot of advice via Twitter, I’ve compiled my must haves for the upcoming conference.

What to wear: Stylish yet comfortable is the name of my game but by all means, don’t go out and revamp your wardrobe just for BlogHer. Wear what you love, are comfortable in, and will allow you to be yourself. Here are my must haves:
  • Cute and comfortable shoes- I like shoes that I can dress up and down. I’ll be wearing these sandals a lot. They are by Born. I love the silver O ring for a little night time sparkle and the high heel goes great with all of my favorite dresses. Personally purchased all shoes.
  • Yummie Tummie Maxi Dress- The. Most. Comfortable. Dress. Ever. And so flattering too thanks to the Yummie Tummie shaping panel that smoothes everything out. Looks great day or night with aforementioned comfy shoes. I’ll also be packing my regular Yummie Tummies and my new black Chiffon Tier Top. If you are looking to get a Yummie Tummie, do it with a 20% off discount using the YUMTJOOS code. All Yummie Tummies were provided for my work as a Brand Ambassador.
I'm accessorizing with a...
  • Big purse- These days my bag of choice is my Hayden Harnett Trophy Satchel. It is large enough to carry my netbook and gadgets with plenty of room left over for things that I might pick up during the day. And it goes with my standard conference wardrobe of black and white. What can I say? I try to pack light! I personally purchased my Trophy Satchel.
  • Twitter handle necklace- You know you’ve hit nerd-dom when all you want for the holidays is a Twitter handle necklace. But seriously, ever since I knew such a thing existed, I coveted it. It is the cool way to wear a nametag and has cut down on the I-think-she-looks-familiar stares when people try to recognize me from my teeny tiny avatar. My Twitter handle necklace is from Survival of the Hippest and was a gift from Tech Savvy Daddy.
Gadgets to bring: I’ve been fielding a lot of questions about tech gadgets to bring. Laptop or no laptop? Your choice. Do I need to buy a netbook to take notes? No, you don’t. If you have it, bring it if you want but you can also leave it at home. I am paring down my gadgets and bringing the bare essentials. Here they are:
  • T-Mobile Dell Mini with WebConnect- This little netbook is amazing because the WebConnect allows me to use either wifi or T-Mobile’s cellular network to access the internet. I can toggle back and forth depending on what has the strongest signal so I can live Tweet any session I’m in and take notes via Google Docs. And it fits in the aforementioned purse! My T-Mobile Mini with WebConnect is on loan from T-Mobile.
  • iGo Charge Anywhere- Charge Anywhere you ask? Why, yes indeed! This device plugs into the wall and charges so when I run out of juice for my phone, Flip, etc. I an just plug in the USB cord and the correct tip for the dead device and recharge in my purse. I love that there are different tips available for the iGo so there’s no cord clutter at the bottom of my bag. Just swap tips and go! Oh, and since there are two USB ports in the Charge Anywhere, you can charge 2 devices at once. I’m gushing about this device because it is genius! Charge Anywhere retails for $49.99 but mine was given to me at the DC Metro Moms event by SV Moms. I have personally purchased extra tips.
  • Flip Mino HD and Joby GorillaPod- Last year the fabulous Jeanne over at Yahoo! sent me a Flip with a custom Yahoo MotherBoard face plate. I love love love it and am going to take it along with my Joby GorillaPod ($19.99) so I can actually be in videos for BitMoms rather than being that off camera voice. I know you are probably saying that I could just use my phone to eliminate these two gadgets and you are right. But I’m going old school with my tiny Flip. Flip Mino HD ($199-229) courtesy of Yahoo! MotherBoard but I personally purchased the Joby GorillaPod.
  • Power strip- Ever notice that when you go to a blogging conference, there are never enough outlets in the room? Try rooming with 2 or 3 other bloggers for the ultimate weekend sleepover and there will certainly be outlet shortage. This year I’m bringing my own power strip and might even label my cords. Yes, I’m serious. The teacher in me loves my Mabel’s Labels and the geek in me loves their Cord Control pack. Power strip was personally purchased and Mabel’s Labels provided labels for me for last year’s Blogalicious conference.
And here are just a few of my miscellaneous must haves for conference survival:
  • Business cards- Usually I’ve gone cheap and ordered the free ones off of VistaPrint but this year I grew up and upgraded to double sided custom cards with my own logo on one side and the BitMoms graphic on the other. I have a Poken floating around from last year but since those don’t seem to have taken off, I’m leaving mine at home. If you are brining your Poken, let me know and I’ll consider bringing mine so we can tap hands. Business cards were provided by Digital Room for hosting a giveaway but I would have happily paid the $33 for 500 double sided cards.
  • Luna Bars/Cliff Bars- My #1 conference rule is to find time for real meals. I don’t care how many parties are ahead of me for the night but I know a night of hor d’ourves does not make a dinner and skipping lunch can be a bad idea. I like to bring assorted flavors of Luna Bars with me to prevent the hunger headaches and crank attacks that come on mid-afternoon. This year I am also glad I can hit the gyro cart on the corner by the hotel for real food at any time without having to go too far or cross the street for a Magnolia Bakery mini cheesecake if I need a sugar rush. I personally purchase my Luna/Cliff Bars but my kids help me select the flavors.
  • Gum- Because everyone’s mouth could use a little freshening up over the course of the day. Personally purchased although last year I got some from UrbanMama and Common Sense Media.
  • Duffel bag- Swag is inevitable. I’ve learned to take only what I really am interested in, need, and will write about. I always secretly hope that companies will hand out coupons or follow up with me post-conference about items to review so I don’t have to schlep them home but that’s not everyone’s vision. So I find that after trading with my bloggy BFFs and visiting the swag recycling suite, it is helpful to have an extra bag that I’ve stashed in my suitcase for the items that I really and truly want to bring home. My duffel is from LL Bean and was purchased way before I started blogging.
Still feeling a little anxious about BlogHer? If you have never been before or haven't been in awhile, here's a short list of must read BlogHer posts from friends in the blogosphere because I couldn’t have said it any better:
See you at BlogHer!

Percy Jackson & the Olympians Delights Readers & Viewers (giveaway)

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief DVDThe Percy Jackson series was a huge hit among the 5th graders at my school this year and left them wanting to know more about Greek gods and goddesses. It was absolutely amazing that they chose to research topics like Pandora, Aphrodite, Zeus, Kronos, and Artemis for their independent research topics. If your child is a fan of the Percy Jackson series, then they will love the brand new Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief which is now out on Blu-ray ($39.99) and DVD ($29.99).

Based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan, the film follows trouble-prone Percy Jackson who finds himself having problems in high school… but that’s the least of his challenges. It’s the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus have walked out of the pages of his Greek mythology texts and into his life, and they’re not happy – Zeus’ lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Learning he is the son of Poseidon, the young teen finds himself caught between angry and battling gods, and embarks on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Find out how Percy is able to prove his innocence, recover the lightening bolt, and prevent a war among the gods in this amazing fantasy adventure starring Pierce Brosnan, Kevin McKidd, and Uma Thurman!

Now I finally understand why my students love this series so much and all the intricacies of the series that I heard my 5th graders talk about endlessly while out on morning bus duty!

Giveaway: Win 1 of 2 copies of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief generously provided by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. To enter, leave a comment about your favorite Greek god or goddess or which of the Percy Jackson’s books was your child’s favorite. Include your Twitter handle or email so I can contact you when you win! A winner will be selected in approximately 1 week.

I received a copy of this DVD for review purposes. No compensation was received for sharing my review or hosting this giveaway.

Adding ALT Tags to Images

After posting about meeting with the Yahoo Accessibility Lab, all of my posts going forward will include ALT tags for images. ALT tags are included with an images HTML to ensure those who use screen readers due to visual impairment will know what images are included on a web page.

Usually when you upload a picture to a blog or website, the HTML for an image looks something like this:

"img src= "http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_wWPy3_-vkD0/TEQDsoV5OgI/AAAAAAAADtk/XbVXjzpFYXg/s320/IMG_2239.jpeg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495521510577224194"

Not so pretty, is it?

Between all the mysterious text, you will see: alt=" " To make your photos talk, just add a caption between the quotation marks.

The HTML above is for this photo

Now that I've added an ALT tag, someone who mouses over the image will hear their computer read "DC Yahoo MotherBoard members" which is far more relvant than the mysterious HTML that is attached to my photo.

So simple and yet so helpful!

Yahoo Accessibility Lab Works Towards Computer Access for All

After spending a day at Yahoo attending the Yahoo MotherBoard Summit and learning about the different aspects of the brand (more on that later!), one of the most captivating conversations I had was with the Yahoo Accessibility Lab. Through the Accessibility Lab, Yahoo ensures that every product they make is accessible to every user.

Outside our meeting rooms, Lab members Nate and Victor set up a large monitor, keyboard, and filled the rest of the table with devices I hadn’t ever seen before. A large round red button sat next to a smaller blue one, a headset from which a pointer protruded about a foot from the end sat by the man’s elbow, and there was a modified keyboard with 1 inch square buttons that was vertical rather than horizontal.

Nate and Victor shared how they work to ensure that all Yahoo users can have the same experience. They described how the design of the any website should be accessible to everyone because the internet provides us with independence.

Nate and Victor show Kelly Whalen from The Centsible Life how a
person
with impaired vision could easily navigate Yahoo

I don’t really think about how the internet is my main source of news and information and take for granted the many ways I use it to communicate. I also never think twice about online shopping.

But what if I was in an accident and lost my sight or ability to use my hands? What if I only could move my head?

My world would change but thanks to the Yahoo Accessibility Lab, my ability to use Yahoo for information gathering, communicating, and shopping would not.

People who have been paralyzed from the neck down can have the same experience on Yahoo as those who have full movement of their limbs thanks to the headset that allows them to navigate the site. The blind may not be able to navigate a web page using a mouse but other devices can assist them in keeping up with current events, communicating with friends, and maintaining a sense of self sufficiency by being able to order groceries online.

Assistive technology devices used in the Yahoo Accessibility Lab

Unfortunately, only about 65% of websites are designed to be viewed by those with disabilities. I learned that you don’t have to be a big company like Yahoo to ensure that your site is accessible. Small businesses and blogs can do simple things like adding captions under photos so those with impaired vision can get a sense of the scene in the picture.

The work that the Yahoo Accessibility Lab does has great implications for children in schools. With the internet being such a treasure trove of information and the addition of fabulous interactive educational websites each and every day, students with disabilities can have the same learning experiences as their peers if sites are designed to be accessible.

I spent the entire day passing by the table where Nate and Victor sat, thinking that they were just a couple of Yahoo employees testing out some stuff. I can’t believe that I almost missed out on such a great learning opportunity and look forward to reading the blog that the Lab will be launching in early fall.

The following articles provide more information about how you can make your blog more accessible to all readers and the work that the Yahoo Accessibility Lab is doing:

Tragic Tale of Sexting at Yahoo MotherBoard Summit Serves as Chilling Reminder of Importance of Internet Safety

The Yahoo MotherBoard Summit agenda was jam packed with tons of information but I was most interested in the Online Safety Roundtable featuring Catherine Teitelbaum, Policy Director for Yahoo Safely and Anne Toth who serves as the Vice President and Head of Privacy for Yahoo.

After a welcome, Catherine Teitelbaum showed us a video featuring a local mother and father remembering their beautiful, smart, and talented teenage daughter who took her life because of a topless photo that she sent as a sext to a boy in her high school. The boy forwarded the photo to one friend and the friend sent it to another friend and on and on and on.

The family said that they noticed that their once outgoing teenage daughter who was always front and center as a flyer on the cheerleading squad seemed withdrawn. Just the week before her suicide, the teen told a friend that she was contemplating suicide. There were signs but the pieces of the puzzle didn’t come together until it was too late.

By the end of the video, I was in tears. I felt this family’s pain as they remembered their daughter who died just a year ago. As I passed tissues to those around me, I kept thinking that this story could be any family’s tragedy and was reminded about the importance of my work with BitMoms.

Everyone has the power to prevent kids from committing suicide because of sexts by establishing family guidelines for cell phone use. We can stop cyberbullying by teaching our kids about being responsible digital citizens and acceptable online behavior.

No one has to die. No one’s feelings should be hurt. Kids shouldn’t have to be victims.

As parents, we know that when our children hurt, we hurt. We can stop the hurt before it starts by teaching our own children and educating other moms and dads about the importance of being safe online. Share what you know about the risks and dangers with your network of parents, both online and in real life, before it's too late.

Besides joining BitMoms, here are some websites that were shared at the Online Safety Roundtable that you can explore to keep your kids safe online and are some of my personal favorites:
While I believe that the work I'm doing over on BitMoms is important, information about how to keep kids safe online needs to come from a variety of different sources to provide parents with a comprehensive pictures of the many risks kids face when using the internet.

As a Yahoo MotherBoard member, Yahoo covered all of my expenses to come to the Summit. I am not required to blog about any of the events or Yahoo sites I learned about at the conference but when I do, all opinions are my own. A version of this post appears on BitMoms.com where I work as a paid consultant and expert about internet safety and security for families.

Back from Yahoo MotherBoard Summit With So Much to Share!

First of all, let me apologize to my Twitter followers and Facebook friends for the endless tweets and updates about all the fun that me and fellow Yahoo! MotherBoard members (#YMotherBoard) had during our trip. I know what it is like to be the one at home following the hashtag because I’m usually that blogger.

This time I was treated like a rock star from beginning to end. From the minute I checked in to the fantastic Four Seasons to the time I drove away, I was in awe that a company would roll out the purple carpet (literally!) for me just because I have a blog. What started out as blogging to help a friend has turned into real friendships, paying jobs, and knowing that I have a responsibility to help others through what I do.

My blogging friends are real life friends who get this crazy world that I live in. We are each other’s best collaborators and biggest cheerleaders but are a teacher’s nightmare. Imagine standing at the front of a room trying to give a speech and waiting for your audience’s attention. If you are in front of a group of bloggers, you will be waiting a long time!

We don’t give you our undivided attention. We look at our laptops, netbooks, and cell phone screens and tap away. We process knowledge by disseminating it through tweets and live blogging thanks to being master multitaskers and quick typists. In fact, we are such prolific tweeters that a group of 60 or so of us can easily make any topic trend as we share information with our networks!

I feel a responsibility to share the information I learned at the Yahoo MotherBoard Summit not because Yahoo paid for my trip but because the information needs to be shared beyond our group. Topics such as increasing search engine optimization (SEO), how to write a good blog headline, ideal blog post length (300 words!) and internet safety for families need to be shared for our readers’ sake. It would be selfish to hold in this information and keep it to ourselves when it can truly benefit others.

So while it make take me awhile to digest the many things during a very intense day of learning, please know that I will share. I may have taken leave from teaching to blog but the teaching continues here on my site if you’d like to learn.

Huge thanks to Yahoo and the wonderful planning of Jeanne, Amy, Stacy, Nicole, Gina, and the entire Yahoo Events team for thinking of every possible detail to make my trip to the Yahoo MotherBoard Summit truly memorable!

As a Yahoo MotherBoard member, Yahoo covered all of my expenses to come to the Summit. I am not required to blog about any of the events or Yahoo sites I learned about at the conference but when I do, all opinions are my own.

Yahoo! I'm going to Yahoo!

The kids and I made it to California, specifically Palo Alto- my hometown and the heart of Silicon Valley which is home to the tech companies we know, love, and can't live without like Apple, Hewlett Packard, eBay, PayPal, and Yahoo.

Speaking of Yahoo....I'm so excited (like BlogHer excited!) about spending the next two days with 59 of my favorite blogging moms (there are 80 of us total!) at the Yahoo MotherBoard Summit which has been dubbed "The Mother of All Conferences." Yahoo is treating us to swanky poolside cocktails and appetizers tonight at the Four Seasons followed by an entire day at Yahoo HQs for some amazing learning combined with trips to the free (!) espresso bar.

I'll be sure to do a recap of the MotherBoard Summit here but if you'd like to follow along on Twitter, make sure you are following me (@TechSavvyMama) and search for the hashtag #YMotherBoard so you can get up to the minute reports about The Mother of All Conferences.

As a Yahoo MotherBoard member, Yahoo covered all of my expenses to come to the Summit. I am not required me to blog or tweet about any of the events associated with the conference but when I do, all opinions are my own.

In the Air with our Sony PSP!

From long security lines, cancelled flights, weather delays, to antsy children, traveling can be quite trying but luckily our flight was a dream! Our carry-ons were packed full of gadgets and snacks to keep us entertained and well fed for the cross country flight. As you can see, the PSP was a huge hit!

Little Miss Techie continues to love the digital comics and we are currently searching for games that are not only appropriate for almost 4 year old Captain Computer, but also ones that are easy for his little hands to operate.

Even though our kids didn’t exhaust the current content, I know that I’ll have some new games and comics loaded on to our PSP for our return flight or perhaps they can watch the Tooth Fairy since we didn’t even have time to start it during our trip!

And that’s a good thing!

If you know of any easy to operate games for our soon-to-be 4 year old, feel free to leave a comment! Your comment counts as another entry to win the $50 Sony PlayStation Network gift card!

Tooth Fairy on the Sony PSP for Our Toothless Wonder!

Little Miss Techie's first tooth fell out last week and just last night she lost another one! See those bottom front teeth coming in? We were calling her Shark Tooth because had a double row of teeth until she lost those baby teeth!

Since she's sporting a sort of toothless grin, I think I’ll let her watch the Tooth Fairy movie that came pre-loaded on to our PSP instead of taking a gamble on the in-flight entertainment.

Our PSP’s charge will certainly last long enough to get through the 85 minute movie. Hopefully both will pass out on the plane so I can secretly practice my pathetic Rock Band skills before we arrive at our destination! Wish me luck!

Don't forget to visit my past posts about the Sony PSP and leave a comment to win a $50 Sony PlayStation Network gift card at the conclusion of the Sony #PSPFamilyFun campaign:

Scholastic’s Redesigned Harry Potter Site Introduces New Generation of Readers to Hogwarts

Congratulations to Lynette of PicPocketBooks for winning a copy of the 10th Anniversary hardcover edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone!

While Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and may be a hot series, Harry Potter remains favorite among students even 12 years after Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was first published. Perhaps one of the 7 Harry books is on your summer reading list or currently tucked into your pool bag or you anxiously await the end of the series as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows makes its way on to the big screen in 2 parts this November.

Regardless, all Potterfiles should make their way to the Harry Potter website that features a brand new site specially designed for young readers as part of the The Real Magic of Harry Potter campaign. Launched in March, this site is for Potter-philes ages 7 and older and features games, spells, and mysteries for readers who are just beginning their adventures with Harry.

This new digital experience allows children to wield their wands via the mouse to unlock magic through Harry Potter themed games that correspond to each year at Hogwarts. Year 1 involves practicing wand skills while year 2 requires using logic to solve puzzles to turn teacups into turtles, buttons into beetles, and make dogs from rocks as part of transfiguration. Can you tell I loved this?

In year 3, The Prizoner of Azkaban, use the Creature Creator to change your creature’s traits from land to sea animal and choose its size, eye color, skin type, and sound to make a mythical creature much like the ones who can be found in the Hogwarts forest. You can also find Wizard Trivia Challenges in years 4-7 that require you to answer 10 questions. Note: They are tricky so summer may be the perfect time to study up to improve your score!

Also check out the glossary of terms which is especially useful if you can’t remember the difference between the alohomora and anapneo spells or you need to look up any of the many characters that grace the pages of the 7 books.

With a wealth of content designed to get a new generation interested in the Harry series, this new site is easy for the youngest fans to navigate and a pleasure for any fan who wants to relive the magic of 7 years of Hogwarts.

GIVEAWAY: Scholastic has generously provided 2 copies of the 10th anniversary hardcover edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ($24). To enter to win a copy, leave a comment below sharing your favorite Harry Potter moment from any of the 7 books.

Leaving on a Jet Plane with Our Sony PSP

The kids and I are getting ready to embark on a cross country flight to visit my parents in California. Little Miss Techie and Captain Computer are pretty savvy travelers and have racked up a fair amount of miles on their frequent flier cards in their short lifetimes but this trip will be a little different since it is our first solo flight.

Since it is just the 3 of us, I want to be sure I have plenty of entertainment for the entire trip. Each child gets their own backpack filled with goodies. Just take a look at the handhelds we will be packing! My carry on will contain our fully charged PSP that I’ve loaded with new mini games (thanks for your suggestions!) and more comics for the kids. When we are on the plane, my standards for limiting screen time go out the window since I switch into survival mode until we have arrived safely at our destination.

What are some essentials that you take on the road or in the air when you travel? Leave a comment and enter to win the $50 Sony PlayStation Network Gift Card that I'll give away at the conclusion of the Sony PSP Family Fun Campaign!

I was invited to participate in the PSP Summer Family Fun blogger program by Sony Corporate Entertainment America and share my experiences using the PSP. I received these items to document my experiences and was not compensated for my participation however, I do have an opportunity to win a BlogHer conference sponsorship. All opinions are my own.

Win 16x20 Rolled Canvas Print from OnlinePosterPrinting.com

Congratulations to DDFlores for being the winner of the rolled canvas print!

Who doesn’t love photos of their kids adorning their walls?

We sure do and one of my favorite pieces is a large framed photo canvas print of our family that was taken by a local photographer. This print looks amazing because it is a photographic piece of art! The stretched canvas gives it a museum quality look which is great for hanging on the wall all by itself. No frame needed!

OnlinePosterPrinting.com is giving one Tech Savvy Mama reader the chance to win a 16x20 Rolled Canvas Print worth $50.

To enter, browse the products on OnlinePosterPrinting.com and leave a comment letting me know which one of the photo printing products you might be likely to order in the future. Be sure to include your e-mail or Twitter handle so I can contact you when you win!

Fine print: You must be at least 18 years old to enter and this contest is only open to US residents only. Winner will be selected in approximately 2 weeks.

No monetary compensation was received for this post. I am offering this giveaway as part of Giveaway Blogs and will receive my own canvas print for hosting this giveaway.

Little Miss Techie: Motivated Learner and Independent Googler!

Six year old Little Miss Techie has been very curious about which animals see in color. She knows that dogs do not but has been wondering about her grandparents’ sheep. Being the motivated learner that she is, she tried to find the answer in our nonfiction books about animals here at home. We’ve talked about using an online subscription service called PebbleGo to do some research together.

“Sheep see in color,” she proudly proclaimed at dinner one night.

“How did you find that out?” I asked, knowing of her quest.

“I Googled it.”

My husband and I stopped mid-chew and looked up at each other.

“When did you Google it?” asked my surprised husband.

“At Grandma and Grandpa’s when I was visiting.”

“Oh did you and Grandma look it up together?” I asked. “I’m glad you figured that out.”

“No, I Googled it myself,” replied our 6 year old.

Oh dear.

DC Readers: Mary Poppins at The Kennedy Center is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Washington DC’s The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts hosts incredible musical guests, regular performances by The National Symphony Orchestra, and dazzling festivals but for the next month, the stage is home to a fabulous production of Mary Poppins.

This charming and classic Broadway musical is based on the book by P.L. Travers, and was adapted by Disney for the 1964 musical starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Set in London, it tells the story of The Banks Family, whose two children- Jane and Michael- have a tendency to exhaust nannies who leave in a huff, never to set foot on Cherry Tree Lane again. It isn’t until the children decide to take it upon themselves to write their own advertisement for a nanny that Mary Poppins appears, parrot head handle umbrella in hand, and endears herself to the family forever.

Little Miss Techie and Captain Computer were introduced to Mary Poppins through the movie about a month ago and have been singing Chim Chim Cheree and quoting lines from the movie nonstop. So when we were invited to Mary Poppins, I knew a trip to The Kennedy Center would be a fabulous first performance for them to attend on such a renowned stage. Certainly they would love the performance but I wondered if they would make it through the 2 hour 45 minute show whose run time was much longer than any production at Imagination Stage, Strathmore, Wolf Trap, and Adventure Theater we had previously attended.

We found our plush velvet orchestra level seats and took in the grandeur that is The Kennedy Center. The crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead while Little Miss Techie asked if Julie Andrews would be performing (I wish!) and Captain Computer wondered when it would start (soon!).

Then suddenly the house lights dimmed and the stage lit up. For the entire show, the children were on the edge of their seats, rarely looking away for fear that they might miss the magic of Mary. It was hard not to be captivated by the dazzling set (the Banks’ house opens and rotates!), gorgeous costumes that transported us to a different time, live music (they had peeked in the orchestra pit pre-performance), and special effects. They wondered how Burt was able to walk up and around the top perimeter of the stage all while singing, what made it look like it was raining or snowing inside the theater, how Mary was able to slide up the banister, and others that I won’t spoil here! They loved singing along to their favorite songs (ok, I did too!).

As the house lights came up and the audience began to leave, Captain Computer wrapped his arms around my neck and while giving me a tight squeeze and burying his head in my neck said, “Thank you Mommy for bringing us to see Mary Poppins today.”

Upon returning home, both kids have added some new songs to their repertoire and can’t stop listening to the soundtrack. Captain Computer loves singing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and will often sing it while running at high speed! I’ve noticed that both have been acting out scenes from Mary Poppins too!

Taking in the splendor of The Kennedy Center is always wonderful but for our children, seeing such an amazing performance of such a beloved show as their introduction to such a grand space was truly special.

Mary Poppins is playing at The Kennedy Center Opera House until August 22, 2010. Details and pricing about tickets can be found here.

Thanks to The Kennedy Center and Disney Theatricals for such a wonderful afternoon attending Mary Poppins! We personally paid for our parking and Mary Poppins souvenirs from The Kennedy Center gift shop. I was not required to write about the performance and all opinions are my own.

If I were a teenage boy...

I’d mow the lawn and complete my summer homework packets or spend all of my hard earned allowance to get my hands on a
Limited Edition PSP with Rock Band Unplugged.

Me and my band would skip the Quickplay and Training and go right to Tour.

I wouldn’t choose anything as uncool as
Livin’ on a Prayer or anything else from the 80s.

I’d definitely go for Expert.
That 2 note Easy setting is for sissies.

And I wouldn't ever embarrass myself by
failing during band practice.

As you can see, I need to keep practicing!

What is a favorite song that you would want to rock out to on Rock Band on your PSP? Leave your song below and be entered to win a $50 PlayStation Network gift card courtesy of the PlayStation Family Fun Campaign!

I was invited to participate in the PSP Summer Family Fun blogger program (#PSPFamilyFun) by Sony Corporate Entertainment America and share my experiences using the PSP. Sony PSP Combines on the Go Reading & Gaming for Summer Fun

Our PSP came preloaded with three following mini (or lite) games that were selected due to age appropriateness for our kids (ages 4 and 6):
  • Supermarket Mania- A game where we have to use the joystick controls to race around the store and keep it stocked with the items our customers want.
  • Pile Up Bakery- A 1 or 2 player game that is really testing my ability to use our PSP because of my inability to pile up sweets as they drop on to the assembly line.
  • Tetris- A classic that is so different than the version I used to play on my college computer back in the day!
What additional mini games do you think I should add to my PSP that our 4 and 6 year old would enjoy?

Leave a comment with your suggestions below and be entered to win a $50 PlayStation Network gift card courtesy of the PlayStation Family Fun Campaign! Feel free to suggest as many as you'd like since they are free to download, I can add as many to our PSP as I want without paying a dime!

Also feel free to visit these posts for additional entries into the gift card giveaway!
