The Pitfalls of Kids and Technology

Sure, technology is great but it has its downfalls too. This A Byte Out of Life video features Silicon Valley Moms Group bloggers, Linsey Krolik, Sheila Dowd, Myrna Lantzsch as they discuss concerns about their kids and technology in their home. Smartphones and their multifunction features, Facebook, video gaming, being able to connect with others through gaming, and how to teach kids to be good cybercitizens are only some of the issues that are raised by these three smart women in the second video that is part of A Byte Out of Life series.

A Byte Out of Life videos feature mom bloggers from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, New York, New Jersey, Philly, Washington DC, the Deep South, and Canada as they share their perspectives in professionally edited 5 minute shows about a single hot topic.

The first video featuring SV Moms Group Bloggers centered around the topic of blogging and asked Are You a Compulsive Blogger?

Attention Readers!

Apparently this site is under review for being tagged as a spam blog.  Lovely, right?  So if you see a little warning on the page or get a little popup, please know that I expect this to be cleared up very soon.

And yes, I am quite embarrassed by this and no, despite being tech savvy, I have no idea how this happened.

I promise that I am human and do actually sit here to write these posts.  I am not tech savvy enough to invent some spam robot to write them for me.  Interesting idea but I just don't know how to do that.

So carry on.  Just wanted to let you know in case you were reading this and wondering WTF was going on!

Thanks!

BlogHer Part II- Swag

TechSavvyMama

Capitalizing on the purchasing power of women, companies came out in full force and swag was everywhere. It randomly appeared in our rooms, could be found in suites all over the hotel, in the bags we picked up at registration, and all over the exhibit hall. Swag was nice at first and then became completely overwhelming. Each night Stimey, WhyMommy, and I retreated to our rooms for a night of sorting and debriefing. Had we not, we would have been swallowed by swag in our sleep. We traded among ourselves but also collected an amazing amount of stuff for the recycle room. We recycled bags of paper to stuff in the hotel’s recycling bins and gave full size bottles of shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, shaving cream etc. to Kim Moldofsky’s Save our Soap boxes that were heading to women’s shelters.

Many times the swag at BlogHer seemed excessive and was a sharp contrast to the stuff I got last month when I attended the National Educator’s Computer Conference (NECC). NECC is a conference that is designed for school administrators and teachers who integrate technology into instruction and attendees have to work a lot harder for swag. It is rare that you actually are handed something other than a pen at the conference. Teachers are happy to sit through a presentation for the chance to win something and often walk away with nothing other than the pen they were handed when they first approached the booth. This year there were more t-shirts being given out than in the past. An amazing number of NECC attendees roll the dice and don an ill-fitting shirt from an exhibitor for a chance to be spotted wearing it because maybe they will get a free laptop, website subscription, or a Flip. The coolest swag I got from NECC was a photo of me with Super Why and Princess Presto at the PBS booth and a Clifford flash drive from Scholastic.

The focus of the two conferences differ but the bottom line is about building awareness. While teachers have an amazing influence over classrooms of children and parents, BlogHer made me realize that educators aren’t seen as influencers like women bloggers are.

Ponder that for a moment.

Now here’s my BlogHer swag roundup:

Most Needed- The pair of socks from Hanes after the flight attendant on my flight accidentally knocked over my full glass of tomato juice just seconds after handing it to me. Since I was wearing capris, the tomato juice dripped down my legs and into my socks, staining them for all eternity and making them destined for the trash upon arrival in Chicago.

Most Delicious- The golden kiwis that were a fabulous and healthy late night snack. My dad has always grown kiwis at our home in California but the golden ones were a treat to try. I especially loved the spives (spoon/knife combination utensils) that were handed out to make the kiwis easy to eat. Little Miss Techie loves kiwis and I can see myself packing a kiwi and a spive in her lunch as she heads to kindergarten in the fall.

Most Indulgent- As a victim of an ambush makeover at the Social Luxe Louge, Momfluential's Ciaran gifted me with a gorgeous new navy blue purse, bangle bracelets, Armani sunglasses, and a fabulous pink leopard print scarf that Little Miss Techie is sure to steal for her dress up collection and items that I probably wouldn’t splurge on for myself.

Most Shocking- I arrived to the Room 704 party quite fashionably late and there was a lot of buzz about certain items in the swag bags. 2 of the MamaLaw justices showed me the things that were from sponsor Eden Fantasies and thought they might be victims of some sort of hidden camera joke. Eden Fantasies...Use your imagination!

Most Unexpected- Gift cards that bloggers were giving out on behalf of their sponsors.

Most Imaginative- Graco’s Lindsey Lebresco was giving out prepaid FedEx shipping labels as swag so those who found her could spare some room in their suitcase. Since I didn’t score one, I was so grateful to have the largest L.L. Bean duffel we own packed into my carry on!

Most Wishing I Had Won- Zappo’s shopping spree or one of the laundry fairies who would have come to do our laundry for an entire year. Yes, really wash, fold, and put away! Sigh.

Best Overall Party Swag- Social Luxe Lounge, Mommy Needs a Cocktail (MNAC), and the Blogalicous Lush parties did not disappoint. Social Luxe had ginormous bags ‘o swag that were highly coveted. I love my shiny new stainless steel colander from the MNAC party but I think Stimey had wished that Kristen's new baby, Mason, was in her bag! Thanks to Blogalicious and Lush I will smell fabulous with products both gifted and purchased. Mental note: product junkies like me should. not. bring. credit. cards. to. Lush. ever!

Most Wanted Swag: Coupons. The sheer volume of stuff was just too much. I appreciated the companies that handed out coupons to redeem for products later because they were easy to pack.

Last Year’s Swag That I Most Wanted Again This Year- An aluminum water bottle from LeapFrog. My beloved bottle is well traveled and suffered many encounters with the pavement. As a result, it is looking well worn and loved. I would have loved a second one this year!

Most Prevalent Swag- Deodorant. I don’t know about everyone else but ended up with 4 deodorants. Yes, 4. My pits will be in great shape for a long time!

Swag Trend- The prevalence of company sponsored suites made attendees go into a Where’s Waldo type hide and seek frenzy. Word quickly spread about the suites on various floors. UrbanMama and I joked about getting off at every floor just to see whose suites we had missed in our travels but were already overwhelmed with stuff.

Of course the conference wasn't all about swag. It was about the chance to connect, form relationships, and learn which I appreciated the entire time I was there!

The Best of BlogHer Part 1

I wasn’t going to go to BlogHer this year but am glad I did. It certainly lived up to my expectations and provided nice face time with the bloggers that I read, Tweet with, and converse with via e-mail on a daily basis. I also learned about tons of new tech products that I can’t wait to share with you soon!

Having started my weekend at 3:45 am on Thursday morning and getting far too little sleep all weekend, I am only able to provide sound bites. I was constantly on Twitter throughout the weekend and if I could write my recap in Tweet form of 140 characters or less, I would!

Here’s my Best of BlogHer recap:

Celebrity Moment- Besides being a blogger, mom, and teacher, I am a total foodie! I was so happy to get to Rick Bayless’ Frontera Grill the night I arrived. While his food was heavenly, the real treat was meeting Rick face to face at a demo he did for the National Pork Board. I got to the demo early and was right in the front so I had a chance to talk to Rick as he set up. I admitted to him that I was not brave enough to try the beef tongue tacos he made on Top Chef Masters and instantly regretted not having ordered them when he told me that he had personally prepared the ingredients for the tacos! I can’t wait to make his pork tenderloin with mango salsa!

Ironic Moment- As I was taking pictures and video of Rick Bayless’ demo, I realized that the McDonald’s arches were in the background. Even though I do enjoy the occasional order of fries with my Filet ‘o Fish, it just seemed so wrong when he’s committed to using fresh organic and locally sourced ingredients at his restaurants and McDonalds had videos of their food processing running in the background.

Reason to Get Up Early- The BlogHer 5K that I ran/walked with fellow DC Metro Moms Amy from TeachMama and Justice Fergie of MamaLaw who is planning Blogalicious. The course took us to Navy Pier where we ran over the river and along the water, enjoying fantastic weather and the sights of Chicago at 6:30 am. After getting up at 3:45 am the day before and staying up until I-don’t-exactly- remember-when, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to get up for the 5K but am glad I did. The shirt I got is a nice souvenir and is good for subtle bragging rights!

After Party- When the parties ended, I could always count on DC Metro Mom & friends-in-real-life-roommates Stimey and WhyMommy to stay up a little longer for a nightly roundup. We reconvened after spending each day apart and sorted and recycled swag, shared moments from favorite sessions, and slept way too little! Our only wishes were that the beds at the Sheraton could have come home with us as swag and Jessica would have been with us rather than moving into a new home. Next year I think we need a suite!

Surprises- Going to the Hewlett Packard suite and getting derailed by the Wienermobile parked right outside. I tweeted from inside the Wienermobile for a great shirt! Best surprise moment #2- Walking out of the hotel to head to the Social Luxe Lounge all alone and seeing Whitney from Mommies with Style two steps in front of me. Whitney and I have been friends since college but haven’t seen each other in forever. It was great running into so soon after getting to Chicago and seeing her throughout the weekend. #3 was walking into the Hyatt for Social Luxe and seeing signs that President Obama was going to be speaking there that night!

Thought Provoking Session- I loved the session on marketing to bloggers of color because of the issues it make me think about as a Chinese American blogger of biracial children. The discussion on this very current topic made me wonder if there are marketing and PR professionals who seek me out just to meet their Asian demographic or because they like my writing and site content. I would hope that I’m contacted by people who are interested in forming a relationship and getting to know me- who I am, how I write, what I write about, and what I look for in products- rather than just because I meet some target demographic. I feel that I have a very specific niche with the site and you, as my readers, come here for my knowledge, expertise, and honesty. I hope that future product pitches will reflect my interests and the reviews I write are beneficial to my audience. While marketing to blogging women of color isn’t any different, the conversation that originally started at BlogHer 2 years ago is still continuing but positive progress is being made.

Meals- Dinner at Frontera Grill, the Mexican lunch that was served on Saturday (yummy cactus salsa!), and while our attempt at Chicago deep dish failed (2 hour wait at Gino’s), I enjoyed the walk and company as much as the food at the English pub we found last night. It was a great way to end the weekend.

Tomorrow: The Best of BlogHer Part II- The Swag Roundup

Happy 3rd Birthday to Captain Computer!

Dear Captain Computer,

You are the reason I didn’t want to go to BlogHer this year. I know that you will have birthdays for years to come, you are growing up so quickly and I didn’t want to miss your final days of being two.

This year you went from being a silent observer to a boy who has lots to say. Much like your sister, your vocabulary is developing rapidly. I think it comes from you being a keen observer, listening to your sister talk, and your interest in books. I Stink, Fish Out of Water, and What Do People Do All Day? are clearly favorites along with any book about trains, construction, and other things that go. You love to listen to stories and it warms my heart when you ask your sister to read a book to you and I see the two of you tucked in underneath a blanket with a stack of books.

You straddle the line between being fiercely independent and still needing us. One of my favorite parts of the day is snuggling with you during nap time. It is a rare time of day when you are still. Once you wake up, you are on the go! Happiness comes from helping whether it is with yard work, basement projects, or cooking. I love the way you always want to help and wish I could bottle your enthusiasm for every construction project, desire to use the shovel to clean off the porch when it snows, or sweep the crumbs underneath your chair.

You possess confidence and don’t hesitate in telling us exactly what you want. I was amazed when we went to the hardware store and you told me you wanted a wheelbarrow. You were incredibly convincing and certainly had good reasons for wanting it. I know you are proud of your wheelbarrow and it will be a constant companion for our garden projects.

You are quite thoughtful and love your sister with incredible devotion. She’s your best friend and best playmate. Whether building with blocks, creating tracks for your marbles to run down, operating the electric train, or playing dress up your sister is usually by your side. I love that you always remember to share with her whether wanting to wrap up made-from-scratch rolls made in school or remembering to ask for a lollipop for her when you get your hair cut and she’s not with you. I know you miss her when she isn’t around but I think you enjoy our special time together and discovering new ways to play. You are incredibly adept at building towers, operating the electric trains that were Daddy’s and the new ones from Uncle Jim, and riding your bike. I know you don’t get a chance to tell us everything you want to. It is hard to compete with a sister who is quick with answers and tries to talk for you!

As I write this, I can only imagine what I might be writing at this time next year as you finish your first year of preschool. I think you will love finally getting to go to school on your own, having you own peer group, experiencing things independently, and the challenge of learning new things.

I’m sitting on the plane, almost home, thinking about the big hugs and kisses I will get from you soon and I can’t wait.

Happy birthday! I’ve missed you and am so glad to be coming home.

Love always, Mama

*All pictures were taken from today's birthday celebration. BlogHer recap coming soon!

Website of the Week: 1800Flowers.com (with giveaway!)

Do you take time to yourself to destress and recharge? I know I don’t! While I’m off at BlogHer networking and mingling, I’m also looking forward to relaxing and recharging at the Social Luxe Lounge and Blogalicious’ Lush party among many others.

For those who aren’t joining me at BlogHer this year, 1800Flowers.com has offered a $50 gift card to one Tech Savvy Mama reader. As a busy mom, nothing lifts my spirit more than flowers. I love the sight of a fresh colorful bouquet whose aroma fills the room.

Apparently I’m not alone. A recent Harvard study found that people who made a point of looking at flowers first thing in the morning actually felt cheerier and even more energetic throughout the day. Certain scents and colors can impact a person’s mood and overall well-being.

1800Flowers.com recently sent me the Martha Stewart Sweet Meadow Bouquet, a gorgeous arrangement of lavender Cool Water roses for my birthday to literally make me stop and smell the roses. The roses arrived in a unique glass pedestal vase and were accompanied by white monte casino mini daisy like flowers and seeded eucalyptus. The flowers were arranged and hand delivered by a local florist right to our doorstep. Unlike other online floral ordering services, there was no box to unpack or arranging that needed to be done upon arrival.

I love my roses and have to say that the sweet aroma and bold colors are a joy to look at. According to the Harvard study, roses help boost energy and improve mood. The light purple hue reportedly has the power to soothe, relieve tension, and reduce anxiety while also creating an atmosphere of comfort and tranquility. So far, so good!

I love that 1800Flowers.com makes it so easy to send someone flowers to brighten their day. They have a well designed site where you can shop according to occasion or type of gift (flowers, plants, gift baskets & food). They have some great specials that include long stem roses that start at $19.99 which makes sending flowers affordable. I also like that there is a link for arrangements that can be sent the same day. After all, I know we are busy and sometimes it is easy to forget a loved one's birthday, anniversary, etc. With the same day arrangements, you can have flowers delivered and make it look like you planned for them to be sent all along. And in case you are worried that the same day option will break the bank, it won't. I found many beautiful floral arrangements that began at $29.99.

I know I’ve enjoyed my flowers and want to help you de-stress and recharge or at least make gift giving a little easier.

To enter to win a $50 gift card to 1800Flowers.com, leave a comment about something you do to de-stress and recharge on a regular basis.

Pre BlogHer DC Meetup & BlogHer Tips from a 2nd Timer

In just a week, I’ll be going to Chicago for BlogHer!

As a second timer, I’m not so stressed about what to wear but more concerned about how make it to all the amazing parties. I’m looking forward to the Silicon Valley Moms Night Before BlogHer party to reconnect with the many women whose messages I read on a daily basis and seeing the SmartyCard team who so generously is sponsoring my trip. I’m thrilled about the Blogalicious Lush party where I’ll meet my fellow Blogalicious Ambassadors who I’ll be working with as we plan a great conference that focuses on women bloggers of color this fall. (Click here if you want the 411 on how to get VIP access to the party!) I'm also hoping to run into some of my fellow Being Savvy City Editors!

Given the party schedule, I’m also wondering if I’ll actually be able to get up for that early 5K I signed up for after a night on the party circuit. Apologies to roommates Stimey and WhyMommy in advance! And no, I have no idea what session I'll be attending or the strand I'll be following. Unlike my recent trip to NECC, I haven't even printed out the actual conference agenda yet.

I can’t wait to hunt down Amanda from Scholastic. We became instant friends at BlogHer last year. Amanda was a great person to hang out with at parties and also at an early morning yoga session. This year she’s going to stalked by many since she’ll be carrying a bag of Scholastic goodies for those find her. Hint: Follow Amanda on Twitter using #findamanda and look for her red bag!

I’m excited about working with Yahoo as member of their Yahoo MotherBoard. They just sent me a super cool Flip with a Yahoo face plate so don’t be surprised if I ask you to show me what technology you have brought to BlogHer! I’ll post a picture of what I’m bringing when I get it assembled in one place!

This year I have promised myself that I won’t just live on Luna bars and water between cocktail parties. I will actually eat real meals. I’m planning on dining at Rick Bayless’ Tompolobampo or Frontera Grill even if I have to eat by myself. For the rest of my meals, I’ve downloaded the special BlogHer Michelin guide to area restaurants and quizzed Andrea from Andrea’s Recipes about her favorite Chicago eats at our recent preBlogHer DC meetup.

Sunday’s Pre-BlogHer meetup was like a warmup for the main event. While there were many familiar faces, there were a few times where I had to introduce myself to complete stranger and not feel shy about it. I met up with some of my favorite local bloggers, many of whom also write for DC Metro Moms, and got to know some faces that I hope to spot in the crowd at BlogHer. We enjoyed the casual chic atmosphere at Jennifer Grinnell’s Scene Gallery, a fabulous new art gallery at the National Harbor, while noshing on food by Chef Deryl Shouf and enjoying wine and mojito lemonade. Thankfully Wife and Mommy was way more organized than I was and obviously a far better teacher since she remembered people's names other than their Twitter handles and posted a list of attendees in her post.

Since the party was sponsored by Safety 1st, we got to check out their new car seat called the Complete Air and went home with some of the items from their new ProGrade line like the Secure View Mirror and Soft Solution Roller Shade. I’m hoping to keep an eye on the shenanigans that sometimes occur in the back seat and minimize complaints about it being too sunny.

Giant Food was also a sponsor and while I didn't go home with a gift card to use on my frequent shopping trips to my neighborhood store, we can always use more reusable bags. I love using their hand held scanners and packing my groceries into reusable bags as I shop!

Huge thanks to Safety 1st and Giant Food for sponsoring our get together and also to the amazing Devra for planning another fabulous night out!

If you are traveling this summer, come back tomorrow to win a Summer Road Trip Safety basket courtesy of Safety 1st!

And if you are going to BlogHer, please come up and say hi or leave a comment letting me know that you would like to have real food at lunch or dinner one day!

LeapFrog's New Tag Jr. is Perfect for Younger Readers

Finally Captain Computer has his own LeapFrog Tag device that is just for him- Tag Jr! Call it the second child syndrome but he always clamors for the things that his older sister has.

Ever since Tag arrived in our home a year ago, he has always wanted his own. He loves sitting by Little Miss Techie as she reads with her Tag and often requests The Little Engine that Could, a book that is near and dear to his 3 year old heart being a huge fan of all things that go. Little Miss Techie has always cautiously shared her Tag, hoping that her little brother would be gentle and wouldn’t break it.

While Tag has held up to being shared, Captain Computer was thrilled to get his hands on the just released Tag Jr. ($34.99). Tag Jr. is the chunkier, more durable version of Tag. It is specifically designed for the small hands of toddlers and preschoolers and does not have any delicate parts that can be easily broken.

Unlike the original Tag that is shaped like an oversized pen, Tag Jr. looks a little like a snowman. It has a head with 2 eyes on the top and a bulbous body that contains the volume control and little holes for the sound. Because of the snowman-like design, Tag Jr. doesn’t require fine motor skills to operate it since small hands can either grip the top or bulbous bottom. Tag Jr. also stands nicely due to the flat surface that is designed to travel over the pages of the board books it works with.

Speaking of the board book library… I love that the Tag Jr. library includes titles from Scholastic (How Do Dinosaurs Play with Their Friends?), Dr. Seuss’s Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?, David Smells by popular author David Shannon, and Eric Carle’s classic Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? There are also books with Dora, Curious George, Winnie the Pooh, and The Backyardigans to entice young readers into sitting down with a book that features their favorite characters. Each book is $10.99.

The books that are part of the Tag Jr. library work on skills such as the concepts of print, colors, first words, listening and reading comprehension, listening and speaking, matching, vocabulary, social play, social skills, animals, rhyming, subject knowledge, etc. Just like the Tag, Tag Jr. can be connected to LeapFrog’s Learning Path to determine the length of your child’s play, skills being learned, and even favorite characters and pages. So far there are 10 books that are part of the Tag Jr. board book library and we look forward to the addition of more classics and favorites in the months to come.

We currently have 3 of the 10 board books available and Captain Computer never seems to get tired of reading with his snowman-shaped pal. He loves it when Tag Jr. and greets him by name when he turns it on and off. The fact that Tag Jr. knows his name is incredibly motivating and becomes more like a friend than an electronic tool to read books.

Setting up Tag Jr. is just as easy as setting up any other LeapFrog device. Download the LeapFrog Connect software and then connect Tag Jr. via a USB cable to add book titles, update the Learning Path, or connect additional devices to your child's name. Be sure to click on the personalization button on the list of links on the left to have it set up to greet your child. Personalization is easy…Just type in your child’s name and select a name to greet your child that can be heard every time Tag Jr. is turned on and off. If your child’s name isn’t part of the list, you can send it to LeapFrog for further consideration and select a nickname.

If you already own a Tag and are thinking of purchasing a Tag Jr. for use by a younger child, an upcoming software update in July will allow Tag Jr. books to be used with the Tag! You can read details on the LeapFrog Tag Jr. forum.

Some other differences that I noticed between the original Tag for older kids and Tag Jr. for the younger set is that the USB connection hides beneath the battery door and away from small fingers. Tag Jr. lacks a headphone jack which, while convenient for plane trips and long car rides, helps to protect small ears from being damaged due to listening at loud volumes for excessive periods of time.

LeapFrog products are always a hit in our house and we’ve found something new to love with the addition of Tag Jr. to the LeapFrog family.

In fact, Captain Computer loves Tag Jr. so much that now Little Miss Techie wants to use it! Captain Computer reluctantly agrees, handing over his little snowman buddy to her with warnings to take care of it!

Tag Jr. comes in green or purple and is currently available for $34.99 from Toys-R-Us and Target stores and Leapfrog.com. Visit LeapFrog's site to take a short and fun quiz about reading to get $5 off Tag Jr. you purchase it online. Tag Jr. will also available for purchase at WalMart beginning in August. Tag Jr. books are $10.99 each.

Excerpts of this post can be found on LeapFrog Teacher Tagvocates. I was given Tag Jr. and 2 books to provide a teacher-parent perspective for their Teacher Tagvocates blog. I am also a Tag Ambassador and will be sharing the Tag & Tag Jr love with families, daycares, schools, and libraries by providing them with kits containing both devices and a library of books.

Website of the Week- BookFlix

Little Miss Techie and I have had many conversations about fiction versus nonfiction books. She’s becoming more and more interested in nonfiction books, especially those that help her learn facts about topics that maybe a 5 ½ year old shouldn’t be so interested in such as the Titanic and The Civil War. Unfortunately, most of the nonfiction books about these subjects aren’t designed for early fluent readers.

Welcome BookFlix! BookFlix is a new online literacy resource that pairs fiction and nonfiction texts to reinforce early reading skills for kids in preK-3rd grade. BookFlix is designed for kids in grades preK-3rd grade and relies on trusted educational companies like Weston Woods (a favorite of classroom teachers!) for the fiction video storybook titles and the nonfiction eBooks are by Scholastic.

Ad-free BookFlix contains 85 fiction-nonfiction pairs that organized by theme. There are graphics that accompany each of the categories which makes it easy for children to navigate the site and find favorite titles. Themes include Animals & Nature, Earth & Sky, People & Places, Music & Rhyme, Family & Community, ABC’s & 123’s, Adventure, Imaginations, and Celebrations. You can view a full list of amazing fiction and nonfiction pairs in the different categories by clicking here. Each time I’m on the site I am continually amazed at the sheer selection of titles that include favorite authors (Tomie DePaola, Kevin Henkes, Ezra Jack Keats, Lois Ehlert, Maurice Sendak, etc.) and books that represent different cultures (Too Many Tamales, Chato’s Kitchen, Amazing Grace, Lon Po Po, Why Mosquitos Buzz in People’s Ears, Sam and the Lucky Money, etc.)

In the couple days that Little Miss Techie has spent clicking around and exploring BookFlix, she’s found a wealth of picture book favorites like Click, Clack, Moo and Giggle, Giggle, Quack. Click, Clack, Moo was paired with a nonfiction book about visiting a dairy farm while a more general book about farms was paired with Giggle, Giggle, Quack. I found Sam and the Lucky Money, a fictional story about a little boy who receives Li See for Chinese New Year. The pairing with the nonfiction title Chinese New Year allows for kids to learn more about the traditions associated with the first day of the Lunar New Year. Captain Computer loves the garbage truck themed book I Stink and hasn’t quite discovered that there is an animated story version on the BookFlix site or a nonfiction Mighty Machines Garbage Trucks book!

Little Miss Techie loves that the books come alive through the animation and I like that there is a read along option that presents the text at the bottom of the screen. Words are highlighted as they are read which allows early readers to make a connection between written and spoken words and also helps them build their site word vocabulary. Books that come alive are never a replacement for reading with your child but they provide a nice alternative for children who need the visual stimulation of moving images and words being highlighted as they hear them being read.

BookFlix also offers 21 Spanish pairs, a read along option, educational games, author biographies, and more great features like editorially selected web links that have been screened to ensure that the sites are safe, age appropriate ways for children to continue exploring a topic of interest. Children can also click on the Meet the Author tab on the left side of any book they choose to read or listen to an author biography.

I could rave on and on about this amazing resource but the best way to experience it is to see it. BookFlix is a resource that is only available to schools and libraries but here in the DC Metro Area, many area residents can get access to BookFlix for free through the public library systems.

The links below will take you to the BookFlix authentication page where you have to enter your library card number:

Maryland

Virginia

Washington, D.C.

If you are wondering if you have access to BookFlix through your public library system, please check your public library's page or call them to inquire. You can also leave a comment so I can enlist Scholastic’s help in helping you find out whether your local library or school has access to BookFlix.

Now if only there were some fiction-nonfiction pairings about the Titantic and The Civil War to satisfy Little Miss Techie's desire to learn about these subjects…I suppose The Magic Treehouse Research Guides will have to do for now!

No promotional consideration was paid for this post. I learned about BookFlix while attending the National Educator’s Computing Conference last week.

NECC News: League of Scientists Interactive Game

I have spent the last 4 days learning so much about new technologies and best practices in education that my brain is on complete overload. I was also on the hunt for innovative products that I could share with you. Today I learned that a brand new interactive science game for grades 3-5 called The League of Scientists which looks like a great way to work independently or with multiple players on interactive games that use science content provided by ISTE.

Here's additional information about The League of Scientists from the press release:

ISTE Provides Curriculum for Tabula Digita’s New Interactive Science Game Soft Launch at 30th Anniversary NECC

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®), education game-maker Tabula Digita, and the Monsanto Education Fund partnered last year to develop an interactive science game for grades three through five. Called the “League of Scientists,” the game was soft-launched with game maker Tabula Digita’s at ISTE’s 30th annual National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) on July 1.

“We know that students are engaged by interactive games and that teachers are excited about using them to supplement learning inside and outside the classroom,” said Don Knezek, ISTE CEO. “That’s why we were pleased to be part of this project – it’s an opportunity to be part of changing the way we do education and science and to reach a group of students we’re losing.”

The League of Scientists is free. It allows students to compete against each other in a series of multi-player games, constructed around a standards-based science curriculum. The curriculum was developed by ISTE and covers grade-appropriate life science, earth and space science, or physical science concepts.

The product was introduced to a room full of interested educators as well as more than 100 virtual followers on ISTE Connects who were able to contribute questions throughout the session.
